1. Who this policy covers
LocalShare is developed and published by Richie McMullen (AtomCoder). This policy applies to the LocalShare applications for macOS, Windows and Android, the LocalShare website, and installer downloads provided through the website.
LocalShare is designed to move files directly between devices on the same local network. The LocalShare website is not part of the native app-to-app transfer path and does not receive a copy of the files, folders or clipboard text you transfer.
2. Information stored by the apps
The apps keep the information needed to operate LocalShare on your own device. Depending on the platform and features you use, this includes:
- a randomly generated device identifier, your chosen device name and receive-folder preference;
- visibility, auto-accept and launch-at-startup settings;
- a local transfer queue and up to 100 recent transfer-history records, including file names, sizes, direction, status, the other device name and timestamps;
- local file paths, Android content references or macOS security-scoped bookmarks needed to read selected files and resume queued transfers;
- temporary encrypted-transfer state and partial files required to pause or resume an interrupted transfer; and
- received files saved in the receive location you select, normally Downloads/LocalShare.
This information is stored locally in the app’s support, settings, cache or downloads locations. LocalShare does not currently include advertising, third-party analytics, behavioural profiling or an app account service.
On Android, you can optionally use the camera to take a photo for sharing. The photo is processed on your device and sent only when you choose to share it. Camera capture does not record audio.
3. Local discovery and native transfers
When visibility is enabled, LocalShare announces information on your local network so nearby devices can find it. The announcement can include the device identifier, device name, operating-system type, local network address and port, transfer capabilities, and cryptographic public-key material. Other devices connected to the same local network may be able to see this information.
When you choose a recipient, file content and transfer metadata travel directly between the sending and receiving devices over the local network. Current native LocalShare-to-LocalShare transfers are encrypted in transit. The receiving device sees the sender name, file or folder names, sizes and other information required to display and complete the transfer.
The person controlling the receiving device decides whether to accept a transfer unless auto-accept has been enabled there. Anyone using auto-accept should do so only on a trusted network and device.
4. Optional browser receiver
The apps can create an optional temporary web address and six-digit code for receiving uploads from a browser on the same local network. This feature runs from your device and does not route uploads through the LocalShare website.
The browser receiver uses local HTTP rather than the encrypted native LocalShare transfer protocol. The temporary token and code restrict access, but HTTP traffic can be visible to other systems on an untrusted or compromised network. Use this feature only on a network you trust, share the address and code only with the intended sender, and stop the receiver when it is no longer needed.
5. Website and download information
When you visit the website or download an installer, the web server and hosting infrastructure may process standard technical information such as your IP address, browser and device type, requested URL, referrer, date and time, response status and security events. This information is used to deliver the site, diagnose faults, prevent abuse and protect the service.
The public website does not currently use advertising cookies or third-party analytics. Strictly necessary security or session cookies may be used where required to provide a requested website function. Links to PayPal, GitHub, app stores or other third-party services open those services, whose own privacy terms apply.
6. Purposes and legal bases
Where the GDPR or equivalent data-protection law applies, website technical data is processed because it is necessary to provide the page or download you requested, to perform the LocalShare terms, and for legitimate interests in operating, securing and improving the service. Information may also be processed where necessary to comply with a legal obligation or establish, exercise or defend legal claims.
Files and related information handled entirely between your own devices or devices controlled by people on your local network are not collected by the LocalShare website. You and the recipient are responsible for having permission to share and receive that content.
7. When information is shared
LocalShare does not sell personal information. Website technical information may be made available only where necessary to hosting, infrastructure, security and professional-service providers acting for the website operator, or where disclosure is required by law, a valid legal process, or the protection of users, the public or the service.
Some service providers may process information outside your country. Where required, appropriate safeguards are used for international transfers. Native transfer content is shared only with the device or devices you select, subject to activity on your own local network.
8. Retention and deletion
Local app settings, history, queue data and received files remain on your device until you clear them, delete the files, reset app data or uninstall the app, subject to operating-system backup behaviour. Temporary transfer and preview data is removed when it is no longer required for the related operation, although interrupted-transfer data may remain so a transfer can be resumed.
Website logs are retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for delivery, diagnostics, security, abuse prevention and legal obligations, then deleted or anonymised. The exact period can vary with the type of record and any active security or legal investigation.
9. Your data-protection rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, restriction of or an objection to processing of your personal data, and to receive portable data. Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw that consent without affecting earlier processing.
Because most LocalShare app information stays only on your device, the developer may not possess or be able to retrieve it. You can manage that information through the app, your file manager, operating-system settings or by uninstalling LocalShare.
If you are in Ireland or the EEA, you can also complain to your supervisory authority. In Ireland, this is the Data Protection Commission.
10. Security, children and policy changes
LocalShare uses technical measures including encrypted native transfers, verification codes, scoped file access and local-only discovery. No system or network can be guaranteed completely secure. Keep devices and LocalShare updated, verify the intended recipient, use trusted networks, and review unexpected incoming requests carefully.
LocalShare is a general-purpose utility and is not directed at children. A parent or guardian should supervise a child’s use and decide what content may be shared.
This policy may be updated when the apps, website or legal requirements change. Material changes will be reflected on this page by updating the effective date and, where appropriate, through an in-app or website notice.
